When it premiered last year on PBS, Brideshead set ratings records for public television. In this adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel, Jeremy (The French Lieutenant's Woman) Irons stars as Charles Ryder, a painter who becomes infatuated with the world of the Marchmains, an aristocratic family who live at Brideshead Castle. Moving from Oxford to London and Venice, the miniseries beautifully captures the world-weariness of the upper class before World War II. Irons, Anthony Andrews, Laurence Olivier and Claire Bloom lead the strong cast. But the real star is the literate script by John (Rumpole of the Bailey) Mortimer. (Repeat)
