Aretha Franklin

It would be at least ungallant to hoist Franklin by her own album title, but it sure is tempting. Her chic new blond hairdo (credit goes to Carlton B. Northern and Andre Douglas), a glitzy cover photo by Francesco Scavullo and production by the ebullient Luther Vandross can't conceal the fact that this album is flat and almost lackadaisical. It would also seem soulless even if Aretha's bona fides weren't in exactly that area. Only on the old Temptations hit I Wish It Would Rain does she begin to generate emotion and excitement.
