Pam Tillis

Yes, Tillis, 26, is the daughter of country singer Mel Tillis. No, don't expect this album to be full of C&W standards like Tennessee Waltz and Blue Kentucky Girl. Tillis is a New Wave sort of singer—her musical roots sound a lot closer to London than they do to Nashville. She has a voice of penetrating clarity and an urgent attack that makes for lively, danceable music. Tillis co-wrote all but one of the LP's 10 tunes, and they aren't notable for subtlety. Popular Girl, which she composed with her brother Mel Jr. and Callie Khouri, features the lines, "She's so cool/ She's so mod/ Everybody wants her bod." Killer Comfort's chorus goes, "Killer, killer, killer/ All night long, yeah."
