Picks and Pans Review: Now and Forever

Helen Forrest

One of the best swing era band singers, Forrest worked for Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman, as well as the late Harry James, with whom she recorded I've Heard That Song Before and/ Don't Want to Walk Without You. Those two tunes are on this album, though the 65-year-old Forrest sings them over new arrangements, less naively than she did some 40 years ago. There are also a few songs she didn't record in her band days such as But Not for Me and You'll Never Know. Her backup band, with Hank Jones on piano, Bob Zottola on trumpet and flügelhorn and Grady Tate on drums, nicely complements the contemporary sound Forrest imposes on these old hits.
