People who like their rock on the avant-garde side aren't likely to be crazy about this Vancouver-based quintet. Neither are feminists, given the band's current hit single, Hot Girls in Love ("She likes her tapes on 10/ And it's the same as her anatomy/ She's on a rainbow cruise/ All the way to my room"). But this is not a bunch of musical gigolos. Loverboy maintains a consistent energetic bravado, doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, and even performs a tune about nuclear war, Strike Zone, which three of the five—Paul Dean, Mike Reno and Scott Smith—collaborated on with fellow Canadian Bruce Fairbairn. The group has a rhythmic sense and the ability to sustain a melody. Among mainstream rockers, Loverboy is at least the equal of Styx or Journey.
