Picks and Pans Review: Tell Mr. Bland

UPDATED 09/12/1983 at 01:00 AM EDT Originally published 09/12/1983 at 01:00 AM EDT

Bobby "Blue" Bland

Bland has been in the mellow funk business for a long time. His first big hit, Turn on Your Love Light, came in 1962, and he obviously hasn't done any manual labor for a long time; from the looks of his hands on the album cover, he hasn't trimmed his fingernails since 1950. He can still spin a sensual mood, though, as he demonstrates on the old Peggy Lee standby, Fever. He's amply supported by such musicians as trumpeter Bobby Bryant and saxophonist Herman Riley. What Mr. Bland is telling us is that he still knows about the blues.
