You're not likely to see him on Solid Gold, and he never got around to doing any videos, but the old boy did have a way with a lyric, didn't he? These two albums in RCA's continuing reclamation project cover the years 1914 through 1916. Versions of 'O Sole Mio, Parle-moi de Ma Mère from Bizet's Carmen, and Caruso's own anguished Tiempo Antico are among the selections. Computer techniques have helped reduce the surface noise from the original recordings, but the great tenor hardly needed any enhancement. His voice soars above such trivial imperfections as it still does, with incredible vitality, across the years.
