Picks and Pans Review: All of the Good Ones Are Taken

Ian Hunter

For better and worse, Hunter—the mainstay of Mott the Hoople until the group disbanded in 1974—is still devoted to rock forms of the '60s. That means some uncomfortably message-laden tunes; Somethin's Goin' On manages to get in nuclear war, endangered species and poverty. It means as well unrepentant sexism, as in That Girl Is Rock 'n' Roll. There is also a lot of loose, happy music, though. Hunter includes two versions—one fast and one slow—of his own All of the Good Ones Are Taken and a primitive tune called Fun, devoted to just what its title says.
