Pete Shelley
An Englishman born in Lancashire, Shelley was part of a punk group called the Buzzcocks. His second album on his own is a smart piece of work, blending simpleminded titles such as You Know Better Than I Know and If You Ask Me (I Won't Say No) with attractive melodic hooks and some unobtrusive musical sophistication. He stands up favorably to comparison with some of his better-known countrymen, Elvis Costello not excepted.
