NBC (9-11 p.m. ET)

This new series is obviously inspired by An Officer and a Gentleman, but it stands on its own. In the two-hour episode introducing the characters, a group of recruits undergo rigorous training for a crack Army paratroop unit. Platoon sergeant Yaphet Kotto shows signs of being the series' Louis Gossett Jr. as a tough but sympathetic sergeant. Well paced and engaging. (Premiere)
