Mickey Rooney is excellent as he re-creates his 1981 Emmy-winning role of mentally retarded Bill Sackter, who spent 44 years in a Minnesota institution before a friend (Dennis Quaid, The Right Stuff's Gordo) helped him build a new life. In this made-for-TV sequel, Bill must adjust to life without the help of his friend, who has moved to California. Despite the melodramatic plot, the fine acting makes for poignant viewing. Sadly, the real Sackter died at age 70 on June 16 in Iowa City.
