CBS (9-11 p.m. ET)

A class act. For years the works of John Steinbeck have provided ample material for both film and television adaptations. In this latest attempt, based on Steinbeck's 1961 novel, Donald Sutherland and Teri Garr successfully convey the emotional rage, frustration of failure and loss of dignity that have beset a once prosperous New England family. As the idealist Ethan Hawley, Sutherland portrays a man forced to confront a mounting anger that comes from working in a store he once owned. He becomes a dreamer, unable to prevent his world from crumbling. Co-star Tuesday Weld is a lonely divorcée looking for more than a shoulder to cry on, while E.G. Marshall and Richard Masur lend fine support.
