Picks and Pans Review: The Klondike Quest

by Pierre Berton

The Klondike gold rush lasted from 1897 to 1899. Berton, a Canadian historian who chronicled the period in a 1958 book, Klondike Fever, returns to the subject, this time with engrossing photographs. Some men even posed in front of wintry backdrops in studios before they left the relative civilization of Skagway or Dyea in the Yukon Territory for the mountains and rivers. The outdoor photographs are full of mud, snow and faces that reflect the foolhardy optimism of the human spirit. (Atlantic-Little, Brown, $39.95)
