Photographs by Andy Summers

Goldsmith is one of the most successful photographers of the rock 'n' roll world but, surprisingly, she has been outshot by Summers, a member of the group that's the subject of both books, the Police. While Goldsmith's pictures are routine band-on-the-road stuff, Summers' provide more of a sense of the extremes of tedium and passion, musical and otherwise, that traveling performers endure. (Summers was more willing to risk annoying people by photographing naked ladies he ran into, for one thing.) Neither book offers any information about when and where the photographs were taken—this is synchronicity? (Goldsmith: St. Martin's Press, $9.95; Summers: Quill, $12.95)
