PBS (9-10:30 p.m. ET)

The season's first installment of the American Playhouse series is a drama based on the first novel in Philip Roth's Zuckerman trilogy. A young writer (Mark Linn-Baker) visits his literary hero (Sam Wanamaker), only to find that his idol is not all he seems. Claire Bloom (Roth's real-life companion) plays Wanamaker's wife. The cast is excellent.
