George Lucas saw the need for large-scale escapist fantasy and realized that it couldn't be done any longer with Westerns or war movies. Thus Star Wars (1977) with Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, below, which made the theaters safe for fun movies again. His marketing and subsidiary-rights techniques didn't prove to be too shabby either.
