Dolly Parton

There isn't much to say about this LP other than "Great, again, Dolly; thanks a lot." So let's make a quiz out of this collection of old favorites. Who made the original hit-single versions of the songs Parton sings: Save the Last Dance for Me; I Walk the Line; Turn, Turn, Turn; Downtown; We Had It All; We'll Sing in the Sunshine; I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch); Elusive Butterfly; The Great Pretender? Parton has such style that she can get away occasionally with singing even the most banal tunes, notably the hopeless Downtown. And she personalizes the better tracks, especially the title song, in typically surprising, often touching ways. Bassist Leland Sklar and guitarists Craig Hull and Ron Elliott are among the backup musicians. Okay. Had enough time? Here are the original artists listed in the same order as the nine tunes above: the Drifters, Johnny Cash, the Byrds and Judy Collins, Petula Clark, Waylon Jennings, Gale Garnett, the Four Tops, Bob Lind and the Platters (RCA)
