Following her company's recent opening-night performance of The Rite of Spring at New York's Lincoln Center, Martha Graham was swamped by her jubilant dancers. Later that evening, scores of celebrities showed up at a $250-a-plate dinner dance honoring choreography's grande dame, who turns 90 May 11. Among them: former First Lady Betty Ford (she once studied with Graham), Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, Liza Minnelli, Jerome Robbins, Anthony Quinn, Polly Bergen, Halston and Tatum O'Neal. "Everyone has a hunger for life," mused Graham as the evening drew to a close. "Sometimes it can make you sick. Usually you can digest it."
In New York for a private screening of their new movie, The Hotel New Hampshire, were Jodie Foster, 21, and Rob (The Outsiders) Lowe, 20. Lowe plays Foster's overly affectionate brother in the film based on John Irving's 1981 best-seller. Jodie has interviewed Rob for Andy Warhol's Interview magazine. No sibling rivalry there.
Jagger's New Jewel
It was another girl for Mick Jagger, 40, when model Jerry Hall, 27, gave birth last week to their 8 lb. 2 oz. daughter. Looking like a pint-size Boy George in broad-brimmed hat, braided locks and a frock coat, Jade Jagger, 12, accompanied her dad to Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital to see her new sister (Mick also has a daughter, Karis, 13, by singer Marsha Hunt). Jagger was on hand for the natural birth but, apparently to avoid a paparazzi attack, was absent when Jerry and the baby, still unnamed at the time, checked out three days later.
A solemn Debbie
Like Mick and Jade Jagger, rocker Deborah Harry (photographed at a New York City market) has been visiting Lenox Hill Hospital, though for different reasons. Since 1982 Chris Stein, 34, Harry's lover as well as lead guitarist of the group Blondie, has suffered from a mysterious and life-threatening ailment. Last month Stein was admitted to Lenox Hill, and Harry, 38, has abandoned her work to stick close to Stein's bedside. "This is the most important thing in my life right now," says Debbie. "I just want to see Chris get better."
