Picks and Pans Review: What's New

Charles Turner

Since 1975 Turner, 47, has been lead trumpet player and occasional soloist with the orchestra that usually accompanies Frank Sinatra in his live performances. Sinatra, nothing if not loyal to his friends, conducted for this album, which features Turner on 10 standards, including Laura, Don't Worry 'bout Me, Stella by Starlight and Time Alter Time. The arrangements—eight by Billy May and one each by Don Costa and Nelson Riddle—are elegantly swinging extrapolations of marvelous old songs. Turner, who lives in Las Vegas, has a rich, warm tone, and if his playing on this LP is a trifle on the conservative side, it's also reflective and full of feeling. He has done the man he calls "Boss" proud. (Chas Records, P.O. Box 14580, Las Vegas, Nevada 89114)
