by Barbara G. Walker

The Ions, Pinsent and Piggott volumes (by Peter Bedrick Books, each $16.95) are part of a series of introductions to mythology, well illustrated and basic in nature. The Walker book (Harper & Row, $29.95) contains brief entries on major aspects of mythology, with a number of subject headings that wouldn't necessarily appear in a nongender-related work; abortion, foot binding, sexism and vagina dentata ("the toothed vagina," about men's fear of sex, a theme reflected in various cultures). Plenty of footnotes, no illustrations.
