Picks and Pans Review: The Greatest Slump of All Time

by David Carkeet

Something is wrong with this team. They are phenomenally successful, but at the same time they are deeply unhappy No, this isn't an account of life on the Yankees but Carkeet's second novel, about a fictional National League team whose players are all clinically depressed. Their afflictions range from sexual-adjustment problems to troubled childhoods. While the book is often quite funny, the novel, like the team it portrays, fades in the stretch.
