Picks and Pans Review: 6. American Express

John Cleese

Dobbs the butler can get an American Express card but John Cleese can't, even if he is becoming the comic superstar of commercials. He's hilarious in this Clio winner and in the Callard & Bowser candy ads on radio. We Yanks are unfortunately deprived of his best performance on a series of Clio-winning British commercials for Sony: Cleese is the voice of a geeky robot (complete with mustache) who's married to a vacuum cleaner but who has a crush on a sleek VCR. Cleese narrowly wins our Funny Brit award over Peter Cook in his Harveys Bristol Cream ad ("America: Throw away those silly little glasses").
