Picks and Pans Review: Things Are Looking Up

NBC (Friday, June 29, 8 p.m. ET)

Here's a failed pilot from two of the people who brought you Lou Grant, Seth Freeman and Michele Gallery. The hour drama about kids in an L.A. high school is filled with truisms: hanging out in the mall, working the stuffed-potato stand, whining "Gollee," getting married at 18 ("because I hate dating") and reading Billy Joel lyrics as vows, lusting after cars almost as much as bodies. (Watch this show and Fame for a comparative study of life in New York and L.A.) The tone is exactly right. The characters are all worth liking. But the pace is slow.
