Picks and Pans Review: The First Word in Memory

Janie Fricke

As polished and confident as she is, Fricke still often seems to be singing songs rather than singing about something. Her music is slick and entertaining; it's just not often moving. This LP contains a number of high-quality Nashville tunes, such as In Between Heartaches (Rafe Van Hoy/Deborah Allen), One Way Ticket (Jan Buckingham/Pam Tillis) and First Time out of the Rain (Beckie Foster/Kerry Chater). Fricke also duets with backup man Benny Wilson on Dave Loggins' Without Each Other. While the material and performances are pleasant, there's nothing in the LP to bring a tear to anyone's eye or make anyone's heart beat faster. (Columbia)
