Dr. John

The Doc (a/k/a Mac Rebennack) was at his funkiest, rockingest, boogiest best when this live LP was recorded last November at the Albany Empire Theater in London. A New Orleans barrelhouse pianist of the first order, he adds another version to the classic renderings of Georgia on My Mind (move over, Mildred, Ray and Willie), growls his way through his own Such a Night, does a piano solo on The Honeydripper and muses over Allen Toussaint's Life, among other things. He is backed by his own gutty band and by organist Chas Jankel, saxophonist John Altman, trumpeter Digby Fair-weather and singer Linda Taylor. The set sounds as if it must have been just as much fun to play as it certainly is to listen to. (Spindrift Records)
