Almost all VCRs come with timers that let you turn them on and off and record a show when you're not around. If you want to record more than one show—say, Channel 4 at 8 p.m., Channel 2 at 9—then you need a "multievent" VCR. It is a frill. But if you don't buy multievent, you'll be sorry when you go away for a weekend and there are two movies you want to record.
