This is jargon you'll be faced with when you start shopping. What it means is basically this: A not-ready-for-cable VCR can't be programmed for all the many channels available on cable. A cable-ready VCR can act as a tuner, recognizing the full spectrum of channels available. It can replace your cable box so that, with your timer, you can record anything except for pay channels such as HBO and Showtime; to record them, you still need to go through the cable box.
