by John Madden with Dave Anderson
Madden wasn't born bursting through an outfield wall in beer commercials. From 1969 through 1978 he was coach of Oakland Raiders teams that won 103 games and included such talented players as Kenny Stabler, George Blanda, Ben Davidson and Ted Hendricks. (When he heard Madden was retiring because of ulcers, Hendricks used his car to knock over a YIELD sign that he then gave to his coach as a farewell present.) Like Madden's TV commentary, this memoir is a wry delight. (Villard Books, $14.95)
