Apollonia 6

Like their Svengali, the erotic clown Prince himself, the women in this group of protégées are parodies of sexuality. They posture, smirk, dress as if they were trying to live up to some dolt pornographer's idea of seductiveness, gush, ooh-aah and sing songs with such lyrics as: "Meow/ I get a fever when you touch my lingerie in public/ Take my temperature to your place while I'm still hot/ I gotta be home by 10/ But I'll be your bestest friend." Apollonia (born Patricia Kotero) is the putative leader of this putative group. She is, for public relations purposes anyway, one of Prince's current romantic interests, as her predecessor, Vanity, was. Another one of the flock, the talented singer Sheila E., sits in with Apollonia 6 on this record, playing drums on A Million Miles (I Love You) at about the level of an 8-year-old with a fairly decent sense of rhythm. Since there are only three women in the group (Brenda Bennett and Susan Moonsie are the other two), it's not clear why they call themselves Apollonia 6. But if it comes to a choice, the ladies need music lessons a lot more than they need brushing up on arithmetic. (Warner Brothers)
