Most books about the dance—and the showbiz variation, just plain dancing—have one thing in common: unflagging admiration for their subjects. Usually liberally illustrated, they most often are a celebration of the art form and its practitioners, with little attempt at criticism, much less winged prose. The current crop of dance books, surveyed by Picture Editor Mary Dunn, is typical.
