Scientists at the Agency for International Development are investigating a piglike animal native to Indonesia, the babirussa, as a possible meat source. Because the animal chews its cud and has a cloven hoof, it might be acceptable to Jews, whose dietary laws forbid eating cudless, uncloven animals, and to Muslims, who also are not allowed to eat pork.
