Madonna

"(Boys) can beg and they can plead/But they can't see the light, that's right/'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash/Is always Mister Right." Ah, yes, they sure don't write love songs like they used to, as those lines from Material Girl attest. Madonna Louise Ciccone does have a sense of humor, though, even if, like her sister singers of the Cyndi Lauper school, she is buried under so many layers of self-parody it's hard to tell sometimes. The lyrics on this album are on the primitive side. They might have been lifted off cave walls, full as they are of "oohs," "ahs" and "shoo bee doo bees." But Madonna, 24, can be subtle—Shoo-Bee-Doo is actually a quiet, romantic sort of song—and keeps the tone bright and airy. She's backed on this, her second album, by the reliable rhythmic touch of veteran producer Nile Rodgers. His contributions have helped her create a tolerable bit of fluff. (Sire)
