Eartha Kitt
After nearly 16 years without releasing an album in the U.S., Kitt, 56, is back to sing disco-style about her favorite subjects: sex and money (not necessarily in that order). I Love Men contains one gold hit in Europe, Where Is My Man. Though it's not likely to reach any real popularity here, except in the clubs where they still insist on dancing to Euro-disco, Kitt's six-song minialbum will cheer fans of high camp. With her seductive catwoman purrs, she snarls out a message of unabashed materialism: "I need champagne, truffles, caviar/Send it here, make it snappy/You send me fish sticks, beer and pickles in a jar/Frankly, my dear, I'm not happy." Jacques Morali, who packaged the Village People back in disco's boom days, produced the album and helped write the sometimes catchy tunes. Eartha still likes to remind people about the anti-Vietnam War speech she gave at the White House in 1968 because she felt it put her on a blacklist with U.S. record labels. Her strong, seductive voice on I Love Men may win back a few of her friends in the music biz. But with such lines as "I just need someone to spank me/I just need someone to bank me/Sugar Daddy/Sugar Daddy," she won't make a pal out of Gloria Steinem. (Sunnyview)
