Picks and Pans Review: 1984

Eurythmics

Because their basic style is so chilly, alienated, mechanistic and hypnotic, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were the perfect choices to score this film. (Most of these tracks are not in the film, however, due to a dispute with the director.) Such techno-pop tracks as Sexcrime and Doubleplusgood, with Lennox's stark vocals riding over Stewart's repeated synthesizer riffs, sound like the most popular Eurythmics singles: danceable, unsettling, sexual, never monotonous for all the repetition. It may not be the greatest compliment to say a band was born to be the musical incarnation of 1984 but if there ever was one, it is the Eurythmics. (RCA)
