Picks and Pans Review: Teachers

Various Artists

A lot of current "sound track" LPs are simply exercises in packaging, with the title track surrounded by flabby filler—listen to Against All Odds (with Phil Collins' title song) or Romancing the Stone (with Eddy Grant's title song). This sound track from the short-lived Nick Nolte-Jobeth Williams film contains a stellar lineup of pop stars, including ZZ Top, Bob Seger, 38 Special and Night Ranger. Most of the songs are pro forma, however. The best tunes are (I'm the) Teacher, an edgy pleaser from Ian Hunter, and One Foot Back in Your Door, by Roman Holliday. ZZ Top, the Motels, 38 Special, Night Ranger and Queen's Freddie Mercury all toss off lackluster songs. Bob Seger and Joe Cocker show up, too. Give Teachers an A for attendance and a C+ for performance. (Capitol/EMI)
