Picks and Pans Review: Soap Stars
by Dianna Whitley and Ray Manzella
In this who's who in "daytime drama," the authors let 31 soap actors and actresses talk about their lives. This direct approach is enough to give readers a case of "I" strain. Catherine Hickland (Julie McCandless on Capitol and in real life married to Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff) says that at one point in her life she "smoked a lot of grass." Terry Lester, who plays daytime's most dashing dastard (Jack Abbott on The Young and the Restless), says he spent "about 10 years of my life being depressed." Darnell Williams (Jesse Hubbard on All My Children) admits that he's "grown to hate" dealing with his fans. These comments are dropped in throughout the book without much elaboration. Even Manzella, writing that his interest in the book came from his exposure to daytime television, does not mention that he was once married to Robin Mattson, who was Heather on General Hospital and more recently Delia on Ryan's Hope. Soap fans probably won't care about all this superficiality; while a fascinating book could be written about the world of soap performers, this isn't it. (Dolphin, $12.95)
