Some acts are so hard to follow, it's hardly worth bothering—like Basil Rathbone's enigmatic Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce's bumbling Dr. Watson. No one has bettered them, including this latest entry in the disappointing PBS Mystery! series, which casts Jeremy (My Fair Lady) Brett as Holmes and David Burke as Watson. This Holmes lacks that certain egomaniacal twinkle in his eyes—thanks, evidentally, to drugs. "What is it tonight," Watson asks Brett's bug-eyed Holmes, "morphine or cocaine?"
