Picks and Pans Review: A Summer to Remember

CBS (Wednesday, March 27, 8 p.m. ET)

Try not to roll your eyes when you hear the plot: A deaf boy (played by deaf child-actor Sean Gerlis) makes friends with an escaped orangutan that, like the boy, communicates in sign language. (That's not as ridiculous as it sounds; there is a gorilla in California named Koko that's been taught to "talk.") The boy shares his treehouse with the ape and protects the beast from bad guys in a circus. Summer—also starring Tess (Tender Mercies) Harper and James (Dynasty) Farentino as the kid's parents—is padded and slow in the beginning, but then it turns into the stuff of which goosebumps are made. If you're a sucker for a good animal story, you'll find it hard to resist this one.
