Picks and Pans Review: Say When

Nicolette Larson

Larson has parlayed her saucy-sweet good looks, connections and hard-edged voice into a substantial career, even if she sometimes seems like the second-team Linda Ronstadt. This album takes her back toward the country side of her country-rock orientation. Recorded in Nashville, it was co-produced by former Presley sidemen, bass player Emory Gordy Jr. and pianist Tony Brown, and contains a bright assortment of country tunes. Particularly worthwhile are Only Love Will Make It Right, a low-burning torch tune by the resourceful Bob McDill and the defiantly vigorous Blow On Chilly Wind by Jesse Winchester. Larson's supporting cast is first class too—Ricky Skaggs, Sharon White, Jim Horn, Jerry Douglas, Emmylou Harris and Vince Gill. Larson serves as a sturdy center around which all the LP's elements coalesce into an invigorating package. (MCA)
