PBS (Tuesdays, 10:30 p.m. ET)

Jim (Jockey underwear) Palmer plays host on a new PBS series that looks at the lives of sports figures, from basketball's Nancy Lieberman (this week) and pitcher Catfish Hunter to skaters Judy Blumberg and Michael Seibert (later). Judging from this week's effort, the shows are slow-moving but decent. One problem, though: Sweat and grunts already fill network TV, independent stations, superstations, more than one cable channel and even HBO. Why PBS too? This was supposed to be the network for articulate people with something to say, not jock talk like this from Lieberman: "You play to survive!... I take my bruises and I give some!... I'm out there to play!... I've always been driven, always wanted to be the best!" Rah, rah.
