Sandra Bernhard is the outrageous comic who co-starred in The King of Comedy and who once sat on David Letterman's head. She's unpredictable. So when you see her special open and she's in a hotel room washing underwear in the bathroom sink, you wonder what she's going to do with it. You wonder where the punch line could be. Cut to a stage where she's beginning to sing a Burt Bacharach medley. Cut back to the hotel where she's calling friends on the phone and nobody answers. Cut to the stage where she's giving a monologue on trimming certain unmentionable hair. Cut to the room where she's whining on the phone. Back to the stage where she's yelling at a heckler with little humor. Back to the room. After a half hour you see that she's done nothing with this hotel room shtik but make a self-indulgent plea for sympathy: The loneliness of the long-distance comic. There is no punch line.
