Picks and Pans Review: Every Time You Go Away

Paul Young

Young is a British artist who deserves more attention here than he has heretofore received, as this moving love ballad, written by Daryl Hall, attests. The video has a split personality, however. The clip depends for its interest on the energy and self-evident goodwill created by Young in concert, and this counteracts the intimate mood of the music. It is more than slightly jarring to have scenes of live-concert exuberance and friendly audience interaction juxtaposed with solitary studio shots filled with plaintive lip-synched sensitivity. The former sell the performer, while the latter sell the song.
