Picks and Pans Review: Pete Rose on Hitting

by Pete Rose and Peter Golenbock

Rose's batting advice is pointed and specific. Choosing a bat, he says, "Requires self-analysis. Are you tall? Are you strong? How big are your hands? You must be honest with yourself or you will end up using the wrong bat." Pete lapses into the occasional contradiction: First, he says, "Who's pitching doesn't matter"; later he says, "I make it a habit before the game to watch the opposing pitcher as often as I can to see what kind of stuff he has." What the heck; if you can be a switch-hitter, you can be a switch-thinker too. (Perigee, $7.95)
