This autobiography of the L.A. Dodgers manager is a quick-reading chronicle of "the son of an Italian immigrant, a runny-nosed little left-handed pitcher with a decent curveball." As the man who pals around with Frank Sinatra and regularly prays to the "Big Dodger in the Sky" traces his roots from the streets of Norristown, Pa., the book sometimes seems like a stale vaudeville routine—pitcher Charlie Hough "was so slow you could time him with a stopped watch." Still, it's a good pitch for fans of baseball who want to love the game a little more. (Arbor House, $15.95)
