by Alison Gordon

Gordon covered the Toronto Blue Jays for the Toronto Star from 1979 to 1983—perhaps the longest a woman sportswriter has ever stayed full time on the baseball beat. Her experience was mixed. One player (Gordon doesn't name him) offered her $200 if she would sleep with him. She says outfielder Barry Bonnell called her "sick" and accused her of trying to spy on naked players. But others, such as burly first baseman John Mayberry, made a point of being friendly. This is a straightforward chronicle of Gordon's experiences, disillusioning in its portrayal of how ignorant some athletes can be, refreshing in demonstrating the generosity of others.
