Like a surgeon, for the very first time
On a visit to San Salvador with Medical Aid for El Salvador, an American group that provides humanitarian assistance, M*A*S*H's Mike Farrell, 46, suddenly became more than an observer. A Medical Aid surgeon, Dr. Alejandro Sanchez, needed help to operate on the hand of a rebel leader, Nidia Diaz. When local medical personnel proved reluctant to cooperate for fear of reprisals, Sanchez pressed Farrell (pictured with Sanchez's wife, Margarita) into service. Explains the M*A*S*H veteran, who donates time and money to Medical Aid: "He said, 'When I say cut, I want you to cut. Retract, you retract.' He gave me a book on tendon surgery in the car on the way over. It all reminded me of M*A*S*H, especially for a while when the lights went out."

Fast food
Taking a lunch break at the halfway point of a Monte Carlo boat race, Princess Caroline, 28, could hardly have known she was due for a second break of sorts. During the next leg of the race, the red Lamborghini speedboat piloted by Caroline and her husband, Stefano Casiraghi, 25, encountered engine trouble and had to drop out. Consolation came later when brother Albert, 27, won the race.

Magnum home run
The five-inning Hollywood Stars vs. Los Angeles sports-media Softball game was all bubble gum and laughs—until the Stars got behind 4-1 in the fourth. Then Magnum, P.I.'s Tom Selleck, who once played ball at USC, hit a three-run homer. The Stars went on to win. Boasted Tom's USC coach, Rod Dedeaux: "I've coached some greats, like Tom Seaver. Now you can add Selleck to the list."

This spud's for you
When a crowd of 1,200 finds its spirits dampened by a sudden downpour, nothing cheers them up faster than a large dancing potato. At least that's what Britain's Princess Anne (left) found when rain soaked an equestrian competition at her sprawling Gatcombe Park estate. In a rare show of royal whimsy, Anne, 35, dressed up as Mr. Funny—a popular British cartoon character who resembles a tuber—and frolicked in front of the audience (below). No announcement was made, but Princess watchers recognized Anne's galoshes.
