Comparisons to the Cosby Show are inevitable—and none too favorable. Here's another sitcom about a happy, cozy family that happens to be black with a funny daddy (Flip Wilson) and a smart mommy (Gladys Knight). The stars of this show are just about as likable as those on Cosby. But there are differences: The writing lacks the realism, charm, charisma and comedy of Cos. Here's an example: A nerd in Flip's office says, "I feel sex is a waste of time." And Flip replies, "Shame your parents didn't feel the same way." Charlie's not Cosby. It's only a contrived copy.
