Loverboy
Like an overanxious boxer, Loverboy goes for the knockout with the group's first swing on this record. Its title cut is a swaggering attempt at a rock anthem. It has a slashing guitar sound, heavy backbeat, a chain-gang chorus and sexually ecstatic lyrics. It has nearly everything but a shred of feeling. The album goes downhill from there. This assembly-line group from Canada seems to have taken a correspondence course on becoming rock stars. The quintet goes through all the standard motions, getting none of the standard results. The passion seems put on. Even the party-animal lyrics are clichés: "Friday night, just got paid, no sleep till Monday/Friday night, who cares, it's only money." Don't stay up on our account, guys.
