Picks and Pans Review: The Vanishing Prairie

This stunning film, which won the 1954 best documentary Oscar, was directed by James Algar. Shot all over the central U.S. by 11 photographers, the movie tracks such animals as the buffalo, mountain lion and prairie dog. While the violence implicit in an animal stalking its prey may upset some children, it is less graphic than in another impressive Algar documentary, The African Lion. (Disney, $69.95)
