Ta Mara and the Seen

Another Twin Cities group, this quintet is a project from the area's resident dance master, Jesse Johnson. He produced this album and co-wrote all the songs, overlaying everything with strident soulfulness, even though Ta Mara herself (she was born Margaret Cox) is a Nordic blonde who looks as if she ought to be singing lieder, not funk. While the music itself is nothing spectacular, the group reinforces the notion that, geography aside, Minneapolis and St. Paul seem to be two of the hottest places around these days. (A&M)
